Namatjira is a niche creative community development process, growing from Big hART’s Ngapartji Ngapartji project. With the support of Ngurratjuta Art Centre, this project pays tribute to the life and contribution of acclaimed watercolour artist and Western Arrernte man, Albert Namatjira.

Based in Alice Springs, Ngurratjuta Art Centre represent contemporary Western Aranda watercolour artists, many of whom are 3rd generation watercolour artists and descendants of Albert Namatjira.

We will be working with the artists to develop an exhibition of contemporary watercolour works, and also to invite them to join the stage production at the culmination of the project.

Elton Wirri (pictured), who has worked with Ngapartji Ngapartji for many years, is one of those artists who will go on to feature in this new project. He will join other Ngurratjuta artists, along with Trevor Jamieson, to bring to life this iconic Australian story.

2009 marked fifty years since Albert Namatjira passed away, a symbolic year in which to launch a project celebrating his life and legacy. Namatjira will be a major new Australian theatrical work, co-produced with one of Australia’s most celebrated and respected theatre companies, Company B, Belvoir St Theatre. Visit their website for season details.
